📝 My October note to members focusses on the importance of capturing independently verified calf birth weights and subsequent 30, 60 and 90 day weights to measure genetic performance. 📐 ‘You can only manage what you measure’ has been my go to mantra ever since meeting Prof Dr Temple Grandin during my placement year with Tesco when visiting ABP Food Group. A phenomenal human. 🔢 A data driven approach helps remove personal opinion and emotion from decision making. Basing decisions on facts removes bias, which can only be a good thing for breed integrity. 🧬 Its encouraging to see the positive response to this approach from our beef farming members. 🌳🦌🏹 And a sad farewell to the Robin Hood Tree. ‘Home home’ will never look the same. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eq2qi3EC

It's been a progressive year for Aramark in building our commitments to purchasing with local/regional farmers with The Common Market, as highlighted in their recent blog on forward commitments to growers. Over the Summer, a team of Aramark chefs and district managers met with The Common Market Southeast to develop a plan for purchase commitments for the 2023-2024 academic year. These forward commitments support both the farmers in having a consistent, predictable market and support our chefs in being able to connect more directly with growers. From Tianna Rose Neal, owner of Starlit Roots: "I encourage new partners to stay committed to that ideal, of buying locally, and understand how much a forward commitment helps sustain the food system, and sustains natural resources. We don’t have to transport food from miles away when it is being grown and distributed right here—all local farmers need are the commitments and the resources to do so".Read more on The Common Market's blog: https://lnkd.in/d8Em997F

When vegetables are added into the meat, the shelf life takes an interesting turn. There’s no noticeable difference right after production. However, fast forward a week, the bacterial growth in the meat with added vegetables is significantly higher than in the traditional minced pork without vegetables. The experiments showed that the proportion of vegetables plays a crucial role. The higher the vegetable content, the faster microbial growth – resulting in a shorter shelf life compared to packages containing only minced pork.🔗 Dive deeper into our research and findings in this space by checking out our latest project on predictive food safety at (in Danish): https://lnkd.in/dzvU6wFG🧪🔬 Join us in exploring the complicated dynamics of hybrid food products and their implications on food safety!#foodscience #predictivemodels #foodsafety

Happy Eat Local Challenge! Did you know that through our Farm to Fork program, we aim to purchase 20% of our food from small, owner-operated farms and ranches within 150 miles of our kitchens. (Small meaning under $5 million in sales when they first join our program!)Since it's inception, we have expanded this to include mid-sized producers of meat, poultry and eggs, dairy, and cheese. They must be owner-operated, within 500 miles of our kitchens, and produced under stringent third-party humane certifications. We’ve discovered the best way to achieve our goals of sourcing 20% of our food locally is to take a holistic approach to creating “foodsheds.”What is a foodshed? A diverse regional network of farmer and artisan suppliers that benefit from long-term purchasing dollars. More than just buying seasonal products here and there, many of our teams now work with producers to intentionally plan product purchases over a particular season or period of time. I am pleased to see this important review article published. My colleagues, Michelle Segovia and Damilola Giwa-Daramola, and I present one of the most comprehensive studies to date examining research on cognitive biases and behavioral economics to the challenge food safety problems and foodborne illness outbreaks. We find that most studies are conducted at the consumer side of the food system, with few studies examining the potential problems that can arise in the production and processing of food. This means there is a lot of potential and necessary work that needs to be done. #behavioraleconomics #foodsafety #mizzou https://lnkd.in/ggWCedYM
