Those who know me, know how I thrive in roles representing farmers, and I can say with confidence, that the last few months have consolidated my reasons for wanting to join the Limousin Society and made me feel very proud to be the CEO. I am fully committed to leading our 2,450 farmer members into a bright new chapter by raising the profile of their breeding accomplishments. Breeding calves with proven genetic value is our mission and with the race to net zero on, I firmly believe we can play an important role in supporting commercial beef finishers to breed cattle with one of the lowest carbon prints. Limousin cattle convert feed efficiently and grow quickly delivering a low age at slaughter and high carcass yield. Staying true to my mantra 'you can only manage what you measure' we have partnered with Map of Ag to support us on our data journey to evidence our breeds potential with proof points. Supporting me every step of the way is Chairman Jonathan Watson, one of the most resilient, knowledgeable farmers I have had the pleasure of working with. 🙏Thank you to British Cattle Breeders Club and Ben Harman for the opportunity to present at this years BCBC conference. 🥩 With over 60% of UK land unsuitable for growing crops we emphasised the important role sucklers play in the uplands, converting grassland into protein dense food. 🔢We asked that Policy should reward the outcome, not the breed. 🧬 We know there are many examples of Limousins and other continental breeds thriving in the uplands, on a low input system weaning a strong calf each year, yet the upland grazing subsidies still favour the native breeds. 💥 Well done to the team at AHDB - Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board Amy Hughes Sarah Penrose (nee Pick)for delivering a highly engaging Beef workshop highlighting the importance of marginal gains in the journey to net zero. #limousincattle#breedingoutcomes #greengenes#britishbeef

💫 Delighted to have the opportunity to present at The British Cattle Breeding Conference on a topic I care deeply about. 🧬 Through out my career I’ve thrived in roles that bring farmers and consumers closer together. I firmly believe there is a massive opportunity for the beef industry to incentivize and reward farmers to breed cattle that have greener outcomes. More from less, reduced days to slaughter which starts with genetics. 🗓️Really looking forward to the debate, see you there, 22-24th January. Green Genes - Revolutionising cattle breeding for a sustainable future' will be held 22-24 January 2024. 📝 My October note to members focusses on the importance of capturing independently verified calf birth weights and subsequent 30, 60 and 90 day weights to measure genetic performance. 📐 ‘You can only manage what you measure’ has been my go to mantra ever since meeting Prof Dr Temple Grandin during my placement year with Tesco when visiting ABP Food Group. A phenomenal human. 🔢 A data driven approach helps remove personal opinion and emotion from decision making. Basing decisions on facts removes bias, which can only be a good thing for breed integrity. 🧬 Its encouraging to see the positive response to this approach from our beef farming members. 🌳🦌🏹 And a sad farewell to the Robin Hood Tree. ‘Home home’ will never look the same. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eq2qi3EC

🌟 Super proud to have secured Merryn Philp to join team Limousin from Harper Adams University. The day I joined British Limousin I knew a placement student would be an ideal fit.🙏🏽 I owe my entire career to the ‘Harper’ placement year I spent shadowing Michelle Waterman at Tesco in the meat fish and poultry category working alongside Matt Hood Matt Simister Jon Downes Breige Donaghy It’s hugely fulfilling to offer the same opportunity to Merryn Philp. 💯 Merryn Philp thank you for all your efforts, only 3 months in and already flying. 🙏 Big thank you to Abi Kay and Farmers Weekly for giving me the opportunity to set the record straight on the Societies past and for listening. 🖊️ A super write up that reflects where we have been and how we are moving forward at pace. 🧬 Reaching a point where I feel Limousin and the Society can play a purposeful role within the wider beef industry by partnering with key stakeholders is hugely fulfilling. Upwards and onwards. #sustainableagriculture #britishbeef#greengenes

🥩 It’s never easy to question the actions of a company that you admire and respect, but on behalf of the farmers I represent, I was glad that The Grocer published my comment. 🌎 So much of the beef industry is misunderstood and oversimplified. What we need is an efficient beef industry, more from less. 🧬 I have listened to many inspirational beef farmers who have chosen Limousin for their ability to grow efficiently and achieve a low age at slaughter, despite the stewardship subsidies aimed at persuading farmers to chose native breeds. Limousins are stacking up commercially without the subsidy. ✅ Limousins are thriving at 1,800ft, grazing the uplands evenly, averaging 12 calves/ cow with calves achieving 1.3kg/day before weaning. #greengenes#britishbeef#mythbusting

❓What is Limousin? I'm often asked, but recognise out side of the farming world, they are pretty unknown yet their impact in the beef industry is significant. 🧬 Limousin is the second most commonly used beef sire in the UK owing to their natural ability to grow efficiently, grade well and finish quickly. It is these carcass traits that allow Limousin to perform favourably in carbon assessments and therefore I believe, Limousin genetics have significant relevance in today's food industry where the drive for net zero is on. 💭Here are my thoughts partially provoked/ fired up from last months #greengenes #netzerosolutions

🗓 It was a significant week for the dairy industry, coming together for #dairytech after a 26 month break and culminating with the celebration of the 100th winnner of the prestigious Gold Cup. 💥 Since joining NMR I’ve been driven to refresh the brand with a vibrant new look. A huge amount of thought and research went into the brand positioning with significant inspiration generated from the emerging section of our business, genomics. 🧬We explored the visual design of DNA sequencing and the Human Genome Project with the Swedish graphic design movement at the heart of the redesign.🟦🟪🟨🟩 Bold san serif fonts, strong colour, vibrant digital screen freeze imagery and visual references to volume of data behind our insights are all at the heart of the refreshed brand essence.🔖 Decoding milk data, building robust insights. This is what we do. Turning milk sample and tissue data into structured insight and infographics to support farmers to make objective decision on breeding, fertility and milk quality management. 🎉 launching the new branding at Dairy Tech proved a real high for the team and created a positive sense of excitement and confidence in our future. 🏆 It was an iconic year for the prestigious Gold Cup award which went to the Torrance family. A phenomenal farming family with three generations stepping forward to collect the award. Congratulations! 👏🏽 Well done to Di Wastenage MBE and the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) team for putting on such a fantastic, uplifting event.

5 weeks into new role at National Milk Records PLC and I’ve been on the road capturing feedback, feelings and opinions from the field team. The overwhelming sentiment has been they want to do a great job for our farmers (our customers) by providing meaningful insight on how they can optimize the quality of milk they produce. Farming is incredibly emotive and challenging, primarily because we’re dealing with livelihoods and animals but what continues to drive me, is that opportunity to make a difference by providing valuable insight and proof points. Proof points of excellence and quality so customers have no reason not to buy dairy. These two (my proudest achievements to date) continue to do well on it, 💯 natural 🐄 🥛 🧀 #sustainablediets #teamdairy #farmingforthefuture #superfood
