The 38 best bed and breakfasts in Cartagena (2024)

Viajero Hostel Cartagena is a great choice for budget-conscious backpackers in Cartagena. It's centrally located and features air conditioning in all rooms. There are also plenty of social activities on offer, making it a great place to meet other travellers.

Amazing staff, great social. This is without a doubt one of the most caring and helpful hostels I have stayed at in my life. The staff are absolutely amazing and nothing is too much. I had so much trouble with a parcel stuck in customs and they were available 24hrs a day without question. The hostel itself is an amazing space, perfect size and great facilities, they also appear to be cleaning constantly so everything is spotless! A/C is on whenever you want which is a saviour in Cartagena.

The hallways inside the hostel are like little streets. It's pretty, but it means most of the hostel is outdoors, and very, very hot. AC in the dorm was great. The staff turn it off in the daytime, but you can ask them to turn it back on.The kitchen was disappointing. It's small and incredibly hot as it's enclosed. The other guests (young party crowd) always left it in as mess. Bathrooms were also very hot. If you're looking for a chill hostel I'd avoid this one just because it seems to attract young partiers. If you plan to party all night and sleep all day, you'll probably like this place.

Loved the fact that each bed cubicle had its own charger sockets and light! Very grateful for the AC as well. Service was friendly and efficient, our door wasn’t opening and they got it fixed immediately. Really fun activities at night as well! Great for socialising :) (although can get pretty noisy at night)

We absolutely loved the hostel!! The location is perfect and the private rooms are great. I really recommend the island tour! Laura and Mango were absolutely amazing, they took such good care of us. Getting to stay somewhere where the staff is helpful but also friendly is exactly what I look for when I travel! I highly recommend if visiting Cartagena 😊

The location was great and they had lots of activities and ways to meet people. It was definitely a hectic environment and loud at night. So don’t stay here if you’re trying to sleep before midnight or sleep in. The room wasn’t very clean and there was a lot of hair in the shower when we arrived. Otherwise everyone was very nice and welcoming.

Positives: Hostel located in a great spot for easy access to the city. Good social environment for tourists and backpackers. The beds were clean.Negatives: The rooms themselves weren’t cleaned that well. And when I arrived there were no towels for a day and a half. Overall cleanliness could be better.Takeaway: I would recommend to stay here if you want a party/social environment and want to make connections with fellow travellers.

Great hostel for meeting people and the bar staff were brilliant at getting people involved on a Friday / Saturday night. Close to all of the bars etc. We stayed in a private room which is not in the main building but across the road, useful if you want to get more sleep, although we were awake every morning at 7am anyway as housekeeping started their shift and their is poor soundproofing. We were not given any info on check in about the hostel amenities but managed to find out by asking other guests. However the room was not great, we paid for superior double room and it was nothing like the photos; small, tired looking, dark and needed attention. We double checked with reception if they had given us the basic room as there was no seating area as described on the website and in the photo; they said they didn’t have any rooms left anyway regardless. It’s a fun party hostel but some care & attention is needed in the private rooms if they are being advertised in a different way.

I only stayed one night, the breakfast could be better. It is near all the historical places in Cartagena and I could stay working all day after my check out.It is normal the appearance of the hostel considering it is located in the oldest part of Cartagena, if you want fancy and new facilities pay more and stay in a hotel.

I HIGHLY recommend staying here! The staff are so friendly, genuine, and full of energy (special shout out to Stiven, Laura, Mango, & Arnold - the best bartender), the rooms are clean and comfortable, they organize a number of activities for the guests every day, and there’s a really good social atmosphere here. The people who stayed here while I was here were really friendly and approachable - we all hung out together almost every night and I did a day trip to the beach with two girls I had met here. The only downside to staying here is that there wasn’t any hot water for the showers but it was so hot while I stayed here (mid-December) that I didn’t really mind.

Location was great for exploring this particular neighborhood. There were two grocery stores (éxito) and many restaurants as well within walking distance. Taxis almost had like a gathering area at the end of the street so it was a good area to go to in order to catch a taxi. The breakfast, which was around 15k-18k COP, was great. The staff were super friendly. My partner and I took a few classes which were great.I’m traveling and working and there’s no dedicated working area or area that is really good to work in without the possibility of a lot of noise. My room was in the bar area and there was music playing during the evenings all evening and night. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend this hostel to an introverted digital nomad. But for the opposite—I 100% recommend. Also, my room had locks in the toilet and shower room that do not work. This gave the appearance of security until trying to use it. This does not give the greatest feeling of safety if staying in a mixed dorm. The toilet room did have a strong chemical smell though which is much better than no scent covering any smells at all. There were multiple bathrooms as well outside the room that any guest could use which I liked.

This is such a fun hostel and there is always several opportunities to meet new guests with the different activities the hostel staff plans for the week. I really appreciate being able to spend time in the common areas to get to know the other guests. The staff is responsive and address your needs which indicates responsibility. I would really recommend staying at this hostel!

Comfortable dorms with great AC (saving grace in the Cartagena heat), nice common areas and small pool, good kitchen and daily free activities. Very sociable atmosphere and great central location. We always felt very safe walking around the area day and night.

The Hostel was clean and the staff was always very supportive! I stayed for a week and during that time the support from Carlos at the entrance was great! I am very glad for his help during my stay! Also the cleaning ladies and in the breakfast kitchen team all were very kind like Johana and Enith.. and Mango at the night events was also very friendly and always keeping a great mood at the bar! Just like Laura and the cooker amazing wraps and burgers!! Could keep naming but do not remember all the names all very friendly! Cannot complain!

Our room opens directly on to the bar area where VERY loud music plays until midnight, then they make a lot of noise cleaning up. Breakfast starts in the same area at 7:00, that's less than 7 hours when it is possible to sleep. Last night's drunken karaoke was unbearable. No hot water, one day there was no water at all in shower. They advertise food service, but they don't actually have any. Excellent location but otherwise only suitable for hard partiers.

Location was central and staff were very friendly. Shared dorm room was small, linen was quite old, below average cleanliness due to high use of services such as bathrooms, lounge areas, etc. there were towel rental fees, and overall was an average lodging experience at best. I suppose the low price makes it more appealing.

I stayed at Viajero for three nights and I had an amazing stay! A special shoutout to Renan for being such a wonderful activities host, he was full of energy, remembered everyone’s name and brought everyone together for the welcome drinks and karaoke! I would 100% stay here again. The location in the walled city is perfect, the shared bathrooms were always clean, it’s easy to meet other travellers and all the staff were super friendly. I was also grateful for the quiet hours after 12am and that the common areas close..so you can actually sleep! Keep in mind that this is a party hostel, so maybe don’t book this hostel if you are looking for an early nights sleep.

Good location. Good for backpackers and solo trackers- very social. You will meet many people. The facilities are pretty mediocre. *air conditioning barley works and no fans- resulting in very warm nights!*. For me it was pretty bad, slept very bad in the heat.

I had a great experience at this hostel. The staff clearly care about your experience and they were all very helpful when it came to suggestions on excursions and local places to visit. Major shout out to Steven who is responsible for the events! He is dedicated and has energy that will light the room.

Yohan Peiris — Google review

The rooms i was in was hot and sweaty due to the AC system being underpowered. People partying in common area past 4am with the staff seemingly doing nothing about it every night. I had better sleeps at Salina before moving here. The hostel needs to do more to regulate the quiet times hours. There were phone alarms going off at night. Someone got up at 3am and proceeded to pack their suitcase for 45 minutes making all kinds of noise with their flash light on shining all around. After this someone came into the room and shined their flash light into all the beds looking for someone. The front door is locked 24hrs and the only way in is to ring the bell and be buzzed in. Well the bell is loud and can be heard from the front rooms. The bell is going off all night. Just another bit of noise to add to the mix. This hostel is poorly managed.

All around great experience! The staff were all friendly and speak English. Met some good travelers from around the world. Highly rec this place over other hostels if you are a solo traveler. Of note, other people staying at other hostels were coming over at night to party ;)

Amazing, so fun, so many activities to join, so many friends to make! The whole experience is awesome, room was a good size. Front desk is super helpful shout out to Carlos🫶🏼, Jorge the Bartender 🙌🏽, and Tom and the person that makes the free coffee and tea which is so great! Location is perfectly close to everything. Best place to stay period.

Food STOLEN and staff did nothing when told, really dirty bathrooms/kitchen, rooms were so dirty. People had dirty smelly clothes all over the floor there was not even space to walk. So inconsiderate. We booked due to the central location but the benefit did not outweigh how bad our experience was!

One of the most amazing hostels for meeting people while traveling solo. Perfect with a group of friends. Party hostel but at the same time no music is played after 12 AM which is perfect.Andres at the reception is kind and helpful throughout with lot of patience and wide smile to welcome everyone.I made so many friends in Viajero. 100% recommended.

The bartenders automatically add a 10% gratuity to every order without asking if the person buying wants to add it. I understand it might not be much money but not only is the service terrible (they are all grumpy and unapproachable) but the staff all seem to be in on it. I brought it up the first night and after a few hours I was told to show proof (the lady stopped adding the tip after I brought it up and tried saying the machine does it automatically). Second night there was a different bartender and she was doing the same thing and when I said I don’t want to add it she seemed shocked and gave attitude the rest of the night. Viajero are making a lot of money by doing this as most people are just tapping their card without looking at what they’re being charged. Poor principles and even poorer service.

Good nice and chill hostel in central location. Nice and friendly staff and clean rooms. Nice swimming pool too and social vibe in the evening. Jesse is the best staff member 😎

We had soooo so so much fun at Viajero in Cartagena! The location and amenities are pretty great but the staff specifically is what makes this place so amazing — Renan was so kind to us and helped us with any and all questions that we had. You could tell he wanted us to love the country, the food, and appreciate the beautiful Afro Colombian culture. He was also such a reliable support on the bar crawl making sure everyone got from place to place safely. We WILL be coming back here. All love <3

Viajero is amazing all around! I stayed at two different locations (Cartegena and Medellin) and they were everything you look for as a young traveler looking to have fun, meet new people, and explore the best parts of the city. Well located, clean, and the best staffs!

This was my first time staying at a Viajero and it will now be my last. Front desk staff were quick to gaslight and didn’t give me many options. One woman followed me out the door and forced me to give up my room key even though my things were still in the room. Also they hired a woman to take people on nights out who didn’t speak English then tried to make it my fault for not understanding her. Lilli at the front desk is the bomb though I loved her. I would not recommend staying here as a black solo traveler either to be honest. I’ve stayed at many hostels but this was the first one that depending on who I talked to, I’d know if my problems would actually be resolved. For the treatment and up keep the place has, the price should be cheaper in my opinion.

Good location, clean hostel, but unfortunately with a very bad service. I stayed 3 nights and paid the remaining balance at check out with my credit card. Unfortunately they charged everything twice (maybe by mistake, I dont know). Unfortunately I noticed when I already left the hostel, so I wrote a message to fix the problem (even with screenshots of both bookings). But the hostel staff were not interested at all and were not willing to refund the incorrect second booking. So I never saw my money again. Very poor and unprofessionell!!!

We stayed at this hostel in early January and had a terrible experience. In addition to wifi not working (at all throughout our stay) the place is in need of renovation and the "private rooms" were basically in a budget hotel the next street over. No atmosphere and no wifi. The "pool" is so tiny and so gross that not many people were crazy enough to go in it.The hostel said that they would refund our stay. Had they have done so we would not have felt the need to write such a review. However, after a whole month of emailing and whatsapping them they have still not refunded the agreed amount, despite written confirmation that they would. They have blamed bank transfers, the finance team and multiple other issues. It's been over 8 weeks since we stayed! The reason for the refund was primarily wifi not working at all throughout our whole stay and we needed it for video calling. We wanted to cancel and stay elsewhere but they would not let us as we had pre booked so we had to keep going to a cafe to FaceTime loved ones (it was New Year). I hope that they eventually sort out refund out.
